Short history of Mauritius:
● Before
the opening of the Suez canal, Mauritius was an important place for resting
and for stocking up on food and water by European sailors on their way to and
from Asia.

Arrival of and colonised by the French. Slaves are brought from neighbouring
African countries to work on the island

Island is taken over by the British according to the Treaty of Paris following
several years of war with France

Following the abolition of slavery, Indian coolies and other workers arrive
in Mauritius
