National dance is the sega. Frenetic in its rhythm, sensual in its movements and colourful in its expression, it is played with traditional instruments (triangle and ravane) and danced by a blazing campfire, or on the beach.

Short history of Mauritius:
Before the opening of the Suez canal, Mauritius was an important place for resting and for stocking up on food and water by European sailors on their way to and from Asia.
1598-1712 Found and colonised by the Dutch
1715-1810 Arrival of and colonised by the French. Slaves are brought from neighbouring African countries to work on the island
1814-1968 Island is taken over by the British according to the Treaty of Paris following several years of war with France
1835+ Following the abolition of slavery, Indian coolies and other workers arrive in Mauritius
12th March 1968 Independence of Mauritius
12th March 1992 Mauritius becomes a Republic
